The Process to Paper Lantern 2013

The Process to Paper Lantern was a collaboration with Illustrator and designer Craig McIntosh. It was chosen to be shown in Analogue Social’s AS02 Paper exhibition held at the Lighthouse in April/May 2013. Analogue Social asked members of the Scottish design community to put forward proposals for exciting projects using the word/theme/material paper as the driver behind the work.

105AD China, paper and the paper-making process is invented. Paper was the result of thousands of years of discovery, invention and development of writing and materials used to write on. Taking inspiration from this process and a beautiful paper object – the paper lantern, we created an object which represents the journey which led to paper. Our lantern uses several different materials each used at different points in history as a writing surface. We have gone on our own process of discovery mirroring that of paper, by creating the lantern using various processes and materials previously unknown to us.

A laser cut felt table lamp designed for a wedding present. The laser cut graphic was inspired by the couple’s travels around the world, taking in famous sights from London, New York, Paris and Glasgow (where they met).

La Fée Verte 2012

A sculptural lamp and a graphic novel – An ancient myth told by the fireside.

La Fée Verte is a collaboration between illustrator Craig McIntosh and product designer David Ross. The creation for Analogue Social’s AS01 exhibition was the result of bringing together separate experiments in casting plaster and screen printing.

Initial discussions between the collaborators regarding their current work, focussing on materials and processes, resulted in concepts inspired by ancient myths carved in stone, and fireside tales passed down generations. With La Fée Verte the pair created a narrative inspired by old legends, but told in a contemporary way.

The lamp structure in acrylic and cast plaster was designed and made by David Ross. The Removable plaster tablets were screen printed with original artworks by Craig McIntosh, based on a story written by the pair.

The Lily Chairs 2011

The Lily Chairs are innovative ply-formed stacking chairs which are functional, versatile and aesthetically unique. When stacked the Lily Chairs function as a single chair, they can then transform to become two separate chairs. By further division these become two Japanese style dining table/chair sets.

Whilst following a competition brief asking the designer to investigate the changing dining habits of the last century, David Ross’ research showed many people were living in accommodation which wasn’t large enough to have permanent dining areas. Without this communal dining space even those living in shared accommodation were finding themselves dining alone or in front of a TV. Many people are therefore missing out on one of the most regular social activities which is key to keeping happy and healthy – eating together. The Lily Chairs were designed to address this issue by making the most of domestic space available. A metamorphic piece of furniture the Lily Chairs can provide varied amounts of seating and also encourage informal communal dining resulting in increased happiness and wellbeing.

The Lily Chairs were launched at Tent London, September 2011.
